Back to Basics: Understanding the Vocational Rehabilitation and Ticket-to-Work Needs of Latinos with Disabilities

Principal Investigator: Brigida Hernandez

Project Type: Small Grant

Project Year: 04

Thematic Category: Return to Work

Project Summary:

The purposes of the project include building scientific knowledge regarding the needs of Latinos with disabilities as they pertain to vocational rehabilitation services and the Ticket to Work (TTW) program and examining the diversity of needs based on type of disability. More specifically, a needs assessment will be conducted with two focus groups. One group will include Latinos with disabilities who are currently employed; the other group will consist of Latinos with disabilities seeking employment. Qualitative methodology will guide the analyses of focus groups. Data from the focus groups will inform the development of a questionnaire that will focus on the needs of and barriers encountered by Latinos with disabilities when utilizing VR and TTW programs. This questionnaire will be used to gather information from a larger and more representative disabled group. This questionnaire will be administered at a large disability job fair in Chicago. In addition, the Extended Services Program of Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital will administer the questionnaire to their working-age Latino clients during a 6-month span.
